Avik Mukherjee
I am a member of Gray’s Inn.

I was called to the Bar in 1990 having graduated from what was then known as Trent Polytechnic (now Nottingham Trent University) in 1989 and completed my Bar Finals in 1990.

I was the first pupil at what, back in 1990, was a brand new set of Chambers, specialising in Criminal Law. I have stayed here throughout the 21 years of my career.

I have prosecuted and defended throughout my career in all criminal courts. These days, I tend to practice in Crown Courts in the East Midlands with regular trips to the Court of Appeal. However, I am not averse to travelling further afield.

In 2005, I was promoted to a Grade 4 prosecutor, which has resulted in my practice involving predominantly trials of:

• Serious sexual offences relating to children and adults
• Serious violence including manslaughter
• Gang-related conspiracies whether violence or drug trafficking
• Fatal road traffic collisions.

In 2005, I was designated as a Pupil Supervisor and have since had two pupils in consecutive years, both of who are now fully-fledged and successful members of Chambers.

In 2009 I was appointed as a Recorder on the South Eastern Circuit.

Some of the recent cases in which I have been involved are as follows:

R -v- GREGSON AND OTHERS
Prosecuting the A52 Ashbourne triple fatality, in which all seven Defendants involved, as either drivers or passengers, admitted their involvement and received custodial sentences of varying degrees.

R -v- BLACKHAM
Defending one of 10 Defendants in Operation Retriever, the largest paedophile ring in the East Midlands. The trial ran for three-months.

R -v- XIONG XU
Prosecuting the appeal by seven Defendants in the Court of Appeal, all of who had been involved in the production of cannabis. This resulted in the then authority of Xiong Xu, which was for a period of several years the sentencing authority on is type of offence.

R -v- JONES
Prosecuting a Defendant charged with rape of his 2 year old stepdaughter. I applied to adduce her complaints as hearsay evidence, which application was successful at first instance and upheld by the Court of Appeal.
